KNOWING SAVES LIVES

Earthquake and Fire Preparedness Seminar

The Philippine Institute of Quezon City conducted an Earthquake and Fire Preparedness Seminar last March 11, 2024, at 01:00 PM, at the PIQC Auditorium and Quadrangle, in celebration of Fire Prevention Month.

The speaker for this seminar was Mr. Bryan Paul Q. Chua, the school’s Safety Officer and a PIQCian alumnus of Batch 2005. He was also the President of the Fire Emergency Paramedic Assistance Group (FEPAG) from 2017 to 2023 and an Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Chief, also from FEPAG, from 2023 up to the present.

The seminar was divided into two parts: lecture and demonstration. The lecture part of the seminar was held at the PIQC Auditorium where Mr. Chua discussed the basic concepts of fire and earthquake. He shared how one should respond to these kinds of emergencies so as not to inflict injuries on people. He added that in case of a fire; knowing when to battle a fire and how to operate a fire extinguisher will be beneficial to both lives and properties. Consequently, different classifications of fire extinguishers were discussed, along with their corresponding usage. With the guidance of Mr. Chua, two students also volunteered to demonstrate the proper way of doing the “Duck, Cover, and Hold” which can significantly increase their chances of survival in case of an earthquake.

The next part of the seminar was conducted at the Quadrangle for the demonstration. Mr. Chua first demonstrated to everyone how to properly use a fire extinguisher using the Twist, Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep (TPASS) instruction. Students from different levels, as well as teachers, participated in this activity with the assistance of Mr. Chua and the PIQC scouts.

With this seminar, PIQC hopes that everyone will be knowledgeable about fire and earthquake safety protocols, because KNOWING SAVES LIVES.
